ABOUT US:

Over the years, we have traveled around the world, making television commercials and taking photos for clients such as McDonald’s, Coke, Chevy, United Airlines, AT&T, Pizza Hut, G.E., MCI, Budweiser, Burger King and Nike. Mostly we’ve worked as a team, shooting images together for Steve & Linda Horn, Inc., but there have also been solo jaunts…like Linda’s trip to Burma (now Myanmar) and Steve’s early years in Paris.

We even met on a shoot. It was for Avon, where Linda was Beauty and Fashion Director at the time. We were in the rainforest of Puerto Rico on assignment for both print and TV ads and boy, did it rain! Three years later, we were married and launched into a life’s adventure of filming, photographing and traveling together….

Wow, was it cold in Alaska! …and really hot in Korhogo on the Ivory Coast. How about the light that morning in Rome? Dawn breaking over the Campodiglio as two priests hurried past…we just couldn’t help snapping away even as we were supposed to be checking camera position for a Fiat spot.

Each project has been unique, calling for different perspectives and an ever-changing array of equipment. The cameras have evolved but it is amazing how well those black-and-white Poloroids and Hasselblad stills hold up today; quick shots taken twenty or thirty years ago on location in Italy and France are now beautiful portraits of quaint villages. Fortunately, black-and-white negatives and Kodakrome slides don’t disintegrate, and the Poloroids have taken on their own special look…like photos from the late 19 th or early 20 th centuries. With great scanners and new software, we are salvaging the details of these early treasures, giving them a place alongside more recent film and digital images.

There are so many stories! Each image a memory of its own. Each camera bearing witness to our hectic lives. On one around-the-globe trek for Delta Airlines, we had a day (sometimes only a half-day!) in each city—Paris, Rome, Thailand, Japan—and yet somehow we made time to run around with the still cameras and scramble through the bazaars for unusual finds. On another commercial shooting—this time for AT&T—we found ourselves in Amsterdam where Linda bought out the contents of a teahouse while checking locations. And while in Greenland for a fashion shoot, we were stranded suddenly by an airline strike, allowing us to appreciate and photograph the glaciers and people of a barren but beautiful landscape.

It became normal to carry the cameras everywhere we went: antiquing on the weekends in Westchester County and Connecticut, traveling to England and France for rarer finds, exploring the markets of Morocco, wandering through an empty factory in rural Pennsylvania…. No matter where we have been, we have always had the Nikons, then the Leicas, and now the digital Canons at our side… though the favorite will always be the Hasselblad.

One of Linda’s greatest passions is for beautiful things, and she has an exciting business in New York (www.lindahorn.com) built out of her love affair with antiques. So even as we have had incredible success in the television commercial industry—countless Clios, our reel in the permanent collection of the MOMA— and great fun with the antique business, we have never forgotten our first “hobby”: still photography.

It certainly is great when your job is taking pictures and so is your hobby!
